Tyra led a chestnut filly from her stall with a soft smile, running her hand down the youngster's long neck and whispering to her that everything was ok. The filly seemed excited, though quickly spooked as two birds flew from a nearby hedge. Thankfully, she didn't seem quite so easy to spook under the saddle and, with work, Kodi would make a fine racer. A few more races and they'd be away, or so she hoped, though only time would show if her hopes were well placed.
Seeing the nerves of the flighty filly as she walked she started to jog, the youngster quick to respond by moving into a trot. Moving more quickly seemed to suit this youngster and when she saw the track ahead she started to pull on the lead reign, making Tyra slow her to a walk. The filly tossed her head, seeming agitated at slowing down when they were so close and Tyra laughed, looking over her shoulder. Her brother, Jake, was supposed to be bringing exactly that, a two year old G5, down for a run, with the pair having decided it would do them both well to get some competitive training.
She opened the gate to the track and mounted Kodi and smiled as she saw Jake walking down with the laid-back but spirited racer affectionately nicknamed Rose. He did not have the issues that she had walking Kodi down, but then again she hadn't expected him to. Though a show off, Rose tended to behave when she was being handled, a fact Tyra was very happy with as misbehaving youngsters could cause havoc in a yard, and they did. Her yard was predominantly youngsters, with it being somewhat new, and the only older ones were her breeders.
Once both riders were mounted onto their respective rides they smiled at each other. They had always felt good on the backs of horses, had been brought up to be horse people. Jake didn't race very often and had no regular rides, but he didn't mind as his main job around the yard was to keep the horses healthy. Still, when he did ride it was quite a thrill that he would never forget.
Tyra was happy her brother had agreed to help her train the two G5 ranking horses, and they had a quick conversation, agreeing that a ten Furlong competitive run was on order today, to get the horses more used to the pressures of a real race. They rode up to the start gates and several assistants managed to coerce the horses into the gates far enough the close them. Kodi snorted and Tyra shifted in her seat while Jake and Rose waited patiently. The gates opened and Kodi darted into the lead while Rose settled into a fair pace behind them.
Making their was up the course their was little action, with both horses seeming to settle until, at the last bend, they made their moves. Kodi had quite a lead on Rose by now, but that lead was being quickly diminished by the two year old. Tyra pushed the front runner but by the time they made it to the finish it was unclear who had won. Still, it wasn't about winning in workouts and the riders quickly dismounted as assistants grabbed the horses. One workout of what she hoped to be many had been completed.
